Reflection: |
As we progress from the digital age to the so-called “hybrid age,” it is not just students who need to understand and use technology, it is the teachers as well. We must be able to utilize, model, and teach the various technologies that our students are expected to use. There are many ways an instructor can demonstrate and incorporate digital competencies in the classroom.
For this standard, Google Sheets, part of the Google Drive suite of apps, is especially useful. Google Sheets grade books has many features that can be implemented to show the students their grades over time, course totals, and class averages. There are even permission settings built in to protect student privacy. Moreover, students can view the formulas that calculate scores. The video lesson, podcast, TrackStar and flipped classroom all demonstrate technological fluency and show how the content of the course can be adapted to new types of technologies and situations. The podcast can be easily downloaded to smart phones or mp3 players, giving the students mobility and the freedom to choose where they want to study. The video lesson is publically available on youtube and can be commented on. Though the TrackStar page does not have comparable mobility or interaction, it is an excellent demonstration of how web resources can be aggregated. Additionally, the flipped classroom contains a multitude of resources within the course page that allow for collaboration and communication among all stakeholders. |
Future Learning Goal: |
For these artifacts, I had to get out of my comfort zone. I had never created a podcast, video lesson before, or a flipped classroom course page; and I had never heard of TrackStar. In the future, I am going to try to generate more lessons using these mediums. I enjoy the versatility the different of modes offer to students. As far as Google Sheets grade books go, I still need to hone my formula skills in order to make the most out of that resource. However, it is something I will incorporate in the future.
