Reflection: |
In developing learning experiences and assessments for our students, it is important to keep in mind content validity, construct validity, reliability, and accessibility. In other words, activities and assessments must develop or test the subject matter and the curricular focus, must be accurate, and must be administered in a manner that is consistent with students’ abilities and needs. For this standard, instructors must develop relevant lessons and exams that complement the curriculum while keeping students’ learning styles and personalities in mind.
When creating a course curriculum or lesson plans, instructors must have a clear understanding of their students’ abilities, needs, desires, and resources. Google Forms (surveys) are an easy to use template that allows instructors to quickly assess a wide range of competencies. Another way in which the curriculum can be based on the needs of the students is by utilizing Quizlet Vocabulary flashcards. They allow the students to study at their own pace and the website even automatically creates practice tests and games for the students to use. When developing assessments, it is important for students to understand exactly what and how they will be tested. For this, RubiStar is a useful and important tool. By creating comprehensive rubrics that the students have access to, it not only keeps the scoring more reliable, but it gives the students a better understanding of what is expected. Weebly Quizzes and EasyTestMaker are two great ways to make tests for students. They have different strengths and weaknesses. Weebly quizzes are limited in length but are much more accessible. The tests created with EasyTestMaker must be given in person or converted to a Google Form. The collection of assessments (survey, presentations, quizzes, and tests) presents a variety question styles and can be used as formative or summative assessment. |
Future Learning Goal: |
While I have created assessments and rubrics before, the tools here make it much easier and more comprehensive. The tool that I would most like to start incorporating into my courses is Google Forms for creating surveys to assess my students’ competencies and needs at the very beginning of the term. By doing this I can develop course activities and assessments that more accurately reflect the needs of my students.
